Koncize pri Esperanto

”It depends on us whether the Europe of the future will be a flower garden of languages or their museum.”
L. L. Zamenhof was an ophthalmologist who was seriously concerned by the fact that in his native town of Białystok (now eastern Poland) Poles, Russians, Germans and Jews hated each other so much that bloody conflicts were almost daily events. He felt that this could be at least partially because they did not understand each other, and that if these nationalities had a common, easy-to-learn bridging language, they might coexist peacefully.
In Warsaw, on 26 July 1887 Zamenhof published, under the pseudonym Doktoro Esperanto (Esperanto = one who hopes) a 40-page booklet entitled ”International Language”.En Varsovio, la 26-an de julio 1887 Zamenhof eldonis 40-paĝan libreton kun titolo „Internacia lingvo”, sub pseŭdonomo Doktoro Esperanto.
In the booklet he presented 16 basic rules of grammar and a vocabulary of 917 word roots. In several respects Zamenhof anticipated the ideas of Ferdinand de Saussure, one of the founders of modern linguistics. He ruled out all grammatical exceptions, the irregular conjugations and declensions, grammatical genders. (It is mainly due to these that the learning of ethnic languages often turns into a nightmare.) The vocabulary of Esperanto is based on the most frequently used common words of the Indo-european family of languages. Innumerable new words can be formed by combining words, and by means of a system of prefixes and suffixes. Whether a part of speech is a noun, an adjective, a pronoun, a preposition, a numeral, an infinitive or a participle, becomes immediately and clearly visible. The conjugation in the past, present and future tenses can be learnt in a few minutes. One sound one letter, one letter one sound - Esperanto is a phonetic language - , everything is written precisely as it is pronounced, so that it becomes almost impossible to make a spelling mistake. The grammatical rules are as simple as possible, after a few weeks of practice they can be used automatically. Later one has only to enrich one's vocabulary.
Since in Esperanto all necessary categories of the grammar are to be found that exist in the ethnic languages; with the help of Esperanto one can learn how to learn a language.Ĉar en Esperanto preskaŭ ĉiuj gramatikaj kategorioj estas troveblaj, kiuj ekzistas en la naciaj lingvoj, per la helpo de Esperanto oni povas ellerni, kiel oni lernu lingvojn.
This is why quite a few people had been encouraged by learning Esperanto to study several other languages in succession, and eventually became linguists, language teachers, interpreters…Tial pluraj homoj pro la efiko de Esperanto komencas ekkoni unu post la alia pli novajn lingvojn, – tiamaniere ili fariĝas lingvistoj, lingvoinstruistoj, interpretistoj…
It can be said that in general 200-300 hours of learning are needed to acquire a working knowledge of Esperanto. To reach the same level in an ethnic language some 2,000-3,000 hours are necessary. Thus the costs of learning Esperanto amount to only some 10-20% of the costs of learning a foreign ethnic language.
It is not by chance that in the 120 years since the publication of the first booklet Esperanto has spread all over the world. At present there is scarcely a country or major town where Esperanto-speaking people cannot be found. Modern Esperanto has developed into a rich living language, which can be used in all spheres of life.
However, Esperanto has had, and continues to have, its share of enemies. Hitler and Stalin persecuted the language and its users. Recently Saddam Hussein exiled a teacher of Esperanto. In our days Esperanto tends to be opposed by people who fear losing their language-based privileges, such as the well-paid jobs they have obtained by their knowledge of languages. This is wrong, but understandable from the human point of view.
Most people experience a degree of inferiority complex when they have to speak to a foreigner in his/her mother tongue.
Esperanto assures complete equality in the field of languages.Esperanto garantias la plenan lingvan egalrajtecon.
It enables us to acquire friends in any country of the world, to get acquainted with the history and the culture of many countries. Also a number of oustanding works of Hungarian literature have reached several countries through Esperanto translations.
The users of Esperanto can correspond from Albania to Zimbabwe in the same language.
With the help of the Yearbook of the Universal Esperanto Association one can contact about 2,000 delegates and professional people who may be directly asked for information or advice.
The ”hosts” listed in the “Pasporta Servo” offer accommodation free of charge in their homes, in 80 countries, to the ”globetrotters” who address them in Esperanto.
It is by no means a rarity that the friendships between young people from different nations evolves into love and marriage thanks to the international language.
Esperanto does not aim at replacing other languages; it rather wishes to serve mankind as a second language, proving that the course of Babel can be defeated. Every generation can learn it anew; it is not the mother tongue of the majority of people, it is not backed by any financial, political or military power, so it does not endanger ethnic languages. On the contrary, it can promote their survival and further development, and the preservation of the linguistic diversity of the world. ”The protectors of languages and the Esperantists are natural allies.” (Charles Durand)
Esperanto may be useful, if somebody has a hobby that requires knowledge of languages, international contacts.Esperanto povas esti utila, se iu havas ian hobion, kiu bezonas lingvoscion, internacian kontakton.
Increasingly helpful is the international language in professional, commercial and scientific activities; the number of professional Esperanto societies and journals is also increasing.La internacia lingvo ĉiam pli ofte helpas ankaŭ la fakan, komercan kaj sciencan laborojn, ja ĉiam pli da profesio havas esperantistajn societojn, revuojn.
The Internet seems to have been invented for Esperantists. According to some sources in the international Internet correspondence Esperanto ranks second after English. The topics of the lists range from family use of the language to the general theory of relativity. The number of Esperanto-language homepages /websites exceeds ten thousand. There is an Internet radio station that broadcasts Esperanto-language hits round the clock.
Radio stations in Brazil, Cuba, Estonia, Italy and the Vatican have regular broadcasts in Esperanto, and Poland and China have daily broadcasts.Oni povas regule aŭskulti esperantlingvajn dissendojn en la brazila, estona, itala, kuba kaj vatikana radioj, Pollando kaj Ĉinio havas ĉiutagajn radioelsendojn.
The Foreign Language Library in Budapest houses the largest Esperanto-language private collection of Europe, the legacy of Károly Fajszi. It comprises more than 20,000 bibliographic units.
In Hungary most universities and colleges accept the state language examination in Esperanto, which brings points and is accepted for graduation. At present Esperanto ranks third on the list of languages at this examination in terms of number of students passing the exam.
If children were to learn Esperanto as the first foreign language in all member states of the European Union, to improve their language-learning capacities, then within one generation the citizens of the Union could speak fluently and in depth to each other without interpreters.
